Collaborative

On Improving Care of Behavioral Health Clients

in Emergency Departments

Beginning 2010

Learning Collaborative Kick-Off and Innovation Session

This IBHI Collaborative – Improving Care in the ED is based on expert panel input, a vetted change package, learned faculty and the successful results of a “Pioneering” Collaborative which completed work November 30, 2008. Participant data collection is ongoing, and will also serve as a reference for the second cycle. During the eleven month collaborative you will learn how to:

  • Improve patient and staff safety and satisfaction
  • Reduce coercion – especially the use of restraint
  • Avoid time wasting pitfalls in diagnosis and placement
  • Reduce Costs: For length of ED stay, for “boarder” costs and for costs of return visits
  • Improve and build collaboration with internal and external stakeholders

Support: Your organization will learn and be supported through an inter-active process. This Collaborative will last for eleven months. There will be three live learning sessions in 2010; bi-weekly and monthly telephone conferences, weekly expert feed back on progress and direct support as needed to help achieve results. An additional six months of data sharing and support will be available.

Cost: The cost of this collaborative is $15,000 and includes annual membership in IBHI. Registration includes most meal costs for three participants at the three learning sessions. Additional members can be included at cost. Participants will pay their own travel and lodging costs. This collaborative is designed for hospitals without specialized psychiatric or behavioral health emergency units, and is open to any hospital wishing to improve emergency care for this clientele. If you are a pioneering, innovative organization willing to tackle significant issues IBHI encourages you to participate.

Enrollment will be available at the IBHI website.

Your organizational team will learn and contribute to a critical understanding of ways to restructure emergency care for behavioral health clients, and the benefits a stable behavioral healthcare approach has for improving emergency health care in general.   You will share with other hospital teams the learning process and the drive for improved results.  These changes will reduce ED costs, speed disposition of clients, reduce injuries, and improve satisfaction for both clients and staff.
