IBHI Briefing Call: December, 2007 10:00 AM Eastern, 9:00 AM Central, 7:00 AM Pacific, December 5, 2007
Beginning to Solve the Emergency Department Log Jam Hospital emergency departments frequently have difficulty serving people with behavioral health problems. These problems come from systems un-prepared for the challenges. The result is exasperated staff, confused patients, and often poor and costly results. Emergency Department systems have been readily improved in other areas by specific, known changes in operations, which can be adopted by essentially any hospital. The Institute for Healthcare Improvement has developed a very effective set of Collaboratives on Improving Flow in Emergency Departments which have dramatically reduced waiting times and improved outcomes. Yet, the gap between what is known about providing the most effective behavioral health emergency care and what is practiced contributes significantly to poor quality and waste. If you are concerned about closing this gap, please join us on Wednesday December 5, 2007 at 10:00 AM Eastern, 9:00 AM Central, 7:00 AM Pacific. The Institute for Behavioral Healthcare Improvement (IBHI) will host a Briefing Call on Improving Care for Behavioral Health Clients in Emergency Departments. The call is Free and will include a presentation by noted experts on current initiatives. The format will be interactive and provide time for questions and answers. IBHI is sponsoring a Collaborative on Improving Care for Behavioral Health Clients in Emergency Departments. This Collaborative is adapted from proven methods of the Institute for Health Improvement. The ideas and approaches to be tested in this Collaborative are drawn from that experience and a newly organized “Change Package” of expert recommendations to improve care. The first learning session for this collaborative will be January 27-29, 2008, in New Orleans and will continue through November, 2008. The Briefing Call will provide perspectives on the planned collaborative, as well as, content specific information. IBHI is recruiting up to five additional hospitals to join the Collaborative community.
